It seems to be some sort of an obsession for me to study different kinds of contrasts between dynamic and static situations. Many of my works have dealt with the subject and this Piano Quintet, written in 2005, continues this same journey of exploration. In this case the work deals with gradually diminishing kinetic energy. The opening is lively and full of action. However from the very beginning static situations appear occasionally. Perhaps the short, repetitive gestures can also be interpreted as a kind of forewarning of the unavoidable journey towards a totally stationary situation. Fast and slow passages alternate constantly. Occasionally stasis takes over and all five instruments turn into some kind of huge mechanical machine, which furiously duplicates repetitive gestures. The last few minutes of the work are completely motionless music. From time to time only the cello tries unsuccessfully to escape the straitjacket of stasis by means of crescendi and glissandi.
