The title “L’homme armé” refers to the Burgundian melody from mid-15th century, which was very well known and a popular tune during 15th and 16th centuries. It was widely used as a cantus firmus in many masses for example by Dufay, Josquin, Ockeghem and many others. I decided to continue this long lost tradition and to use the melody in new context. The tune is augmented so strongly that even the shortest time values of the original melody last in their new form around ten seconds. By this way the augmented melody forms a kind of a skeleton or a structural basis for the whole work. I have also studied carefully the form and the interval structure of the original ”l’homme armé” and then applied these same features to this new work for saxophone and percussion. ”L’homme armé” was commissioned by the saxophonist Olli-Pekka Tuomisalo and it is dedicated to him and to the percussionist Aki Virtanen.

Teoksen otsikko ”L’homme armé” viittaa burgundilaiseen melodiaan 1400-luvun puolivälistä. Kyseinen melodia oli 1400 ja 1500-luvuilla laajalti tunnettu ja hyvin suosittu. Sitä käytettiin myös monien messujen cantus firmuksena monien säveltäjien toimesta, joista mainittakoon esimerkiksi Dufay, Josquin ja Ockeghem. Päätin jatkaa tätä jo kauan sitten kadonnutta traditiota ja käyttää l’homme armé –melodiaa uudessa kontekstissa. Augmentoin melodiaa niin voimakkaasti, että kestoltaan lyhyimmätkin alkuperäiset nuotit levittäytyivät uudessa muodossaan kymmenien sekuntien mittaisiksi. Näin ollen augmentoitu melodia muodostaa eräänlaisen rakenteellisen tukirangan koko sävellykselle. Olen myös tutkinut alkuperäisen melodian muoto- ja intervallirakennetta ja heijastanut niiden piirteitä tähän uuteen teokseen saksofonille ja lyömäsoittimille. ”L’homme armé” on saksofonisti Olli-Pekka Tuomisalon tilausteos. Se on omistettu hänelle sekä lyömäsoittaja Aki Virtaselle.
