When I was thinking about the subject of the work commissioned by “Concorso 2 Agosto”, I found a book from my shelf dealing with old phrases in Latin. As I was leafing through the book, I noticed that a great many of the phrases dealt with fate. The mysterious paths of Lady Luck have always fascinated people, from the Romans to modern people playing the lottery. In the course of this short work, musical situations and atmospheres change rapidly, just as luck can turn quickly. One can face either a stroke of luck or a trick of fate with tragic consequences. Because of this, one can also hear threatening tones of uncertainty in “Fortuna favoris”.

Pohtiessani Concorso 2 Agoston sävellystilauksen aihetta, löysin kirjahyllystäni vanhoja latinankielisiä sanontoja käsittelevän kirjan. Lukiessani kirjaa läpi, huomasin, että yllättävän monien sanontojen teemana oli kohtalo. Onnettaren selittämättömät tiet ovat kiehtoneet sekä antiikin ihmistä että nykypäivän lottokansaa. Lyhyen teoksen aikana tunnelmat ja tilanteet vaihtuvat kuten joskus nopeasti ja yllättävästi kääntyvä onni. Kohtalo kietoo sisäänsä niin onnenpotkut kuin traagiset onnettomuudet. Tämän takia teoksessa kuullaan myös epävarmuutta luovia uhkaavia sävyjä.
