I have often stated that minimalism – especially of the European variety – has been a strong influence on my way of composing. However, minimalism forms only one small part of my composing philosophy and its influences have remained in many cases only on a basic level. "Broken Flower" is my first real attempt to compose a work that can clearly be recognized as minimalist. As a result, a repetitive structure arose that combines Euro-minimalism in the more general scheme with Mozart-like lightness in detail. On the other hand, "Broken Flower" is also surprisingly joyful music. It reminds me of the Swedish television series Pippi Långstrump (Pippi Longstocking) from the end of the 60’s. The series has an unyieldingly positive attitude towards life and is full of childlike wildness. The musical term allegro (lively, brisk) fits the work rather well in this case.
